In the spirit of Tap ‘n’ Run; running and chugging

beer mileWith the Jacksonville Tap ‘n’ Run coming up this weekend (article at:http://tinyurl.com/cnlppfu), I thought that this article from January 2102 might be of interest to local Tap ‘n’ Runners. Or, at least it might give them something to aspire to. By the way, if you still have not purchased your tickets to the Tap ‘n’ Run taking place Saturday, April 13, you can get them at a discount by using the code “FRIENDOFBEER” when you check out at: http://www.tapnrun.com/Jacksonville/Register.php.

Running and Chugging

Frequently I search the Internet for interesting beer news to relay here on the Springfield Brew Crew Blog. Today, as I searched and aimlessly followed a labyrinth of links into the bowels of the web I came across something that caught my eye. And then, in conjunction with that item, I found another. I’ll detail my second discovery later, but today I am going to tell you about an odd alliance between running and beer.

It has long been known that beer is an excellent source of carbohydrates and many athletes will drink a pint after their event to replenish lost energy. Some will even drink before to carbo-load their muscles with energy. But, until today, I had never heard of drinking beer while running a mile. Not only is this an established sport, there are a surprising number of events known as Beer Miles going on all over the country and the world.

The origination of the beer mile is shrouded in mystery, but it is generally accepted that the sport began right here in Florida on a college campus. Which college campus is not mentioned, but I think we can all figure that one out on our own. The first set of rules emerged from a group of milers in Kingston, Canada. In the U.K, Australia, and New Zealand, the event is called the Chunder Mile. The rules vary slightly in that an Imperial pint – or 20 ounces – of beer must be consumed from any drinking vessel the runner desires. But, in North America, the Kinston Rules have gone on to be adopted by most beer-milers with few modifications.

Website beermile.com publishes an extensive FAQ on the sport along with the more-or-less accepted rules for North America. The idea of the sport is to run a mile while consuming four beers in a specific order – beer, run a quarter-mile, beer, run again, beer, run some more, beer, stumble to the finish line. A runner must drink the first beer before he or she begins to run and must complete each subsequent beer before continuing the run. Should a runner not be able to hold their beer down, they must complete a fifth penalty lap. Beer must be consumed from a standard 12 ounce beer can with no alterations or “Easy Pour” mouths – meaning that “shot-gunning” a beer is strictly prohibited. Beer must be no less than 5% ABV to qualify as a suitable beer for completion. The entire competition is timed and the winner is lauded at the end.

To date, the fastest officially-recorded beer mile was completed in 5:09.0; a seemingly miraculous feat that may never be beaten.

A lot is brewing at SweetWater Brewing in Atlanta

SweetWater Logo JPGThere’s always something interesting going on around the SweetWater brewery in Atlanta, Ga. And right now is no exception. A recent press release from the Peach State details plenty of activities at the brewery and in the city at large. This time around there is information about their new brewhouse, their annual 420 Fest, a funky new beer, and the first time 12 bottles of their IPA get to hang out in a box together.

Back in March of last year SweetWater opened its new production facility that took the brewery from approximately 100,000 barrels a day production to nearly 500,000. More recently Freddy Bensch, the brewery’s outspoken owner, proudly unveiled a brand new brewhouse that tops off the $19 million, two-year-long expansion project. But, its not just any brewhouse, this is a 250 barrel beauty that is now producing most of the company’s beers.

Another big thing brewing around the SweetWater offices is the brewery’s 420 Festival. Candler Park plays host to the annual party that features music, art, educational opportunities, and lots of beer. Top musical acts such as Black Joe Lewis & The Honey Bears, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk , and the imitable George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. Add in the Sweetwater Experience, a lively tasting of over 20 different style of beer and along with guest speakers that will enlighten guests with stories of beer and you have a great time. SweetWater’s 420 Fest takes place April 19-21 and is sure to be spoken of in hushed tones for months to come.

Remember that new brewhouse from a couple of paragraphs ago? Well, the first brew to issue forth from it is the next in the Dank Tank series. This time the wizards of the SweetWater brew crew have produced a whopper of a Black Double IPA. called Some Strange. Word has it that the brew clocks in with a monstrous 10% ABV and a potfull of IBUs. Watch for more details on this limited release brew over the next few weeks.

Sadly, with the word of a new brew comes the news that another is being retired. Exodus Porter is being put out to pasture and making its, well, exodus. If you have a few bottles lying around you might want to store them for a special occasion because they are likely the last you will be seeing – ever.

But, with bad news comes more good news. If you have been wondering how you could get 12 of your favorite SweetWater IPAs together at one time and in one convenient box, there is now an answer. SweetWater IPA is now or soon will be available in 12-packs for your hoppy, thirst-quenching enjoyment. So, keep an eye out at your local beer monger for the new boxes.

With so much going on, you would think that the folks at SweetWater corporate offices would be just plain tired. But, happily, that is not the case. Be assured that more great things will be happening and coming down the pipe soon from these mad men – and women – of brewing. We can hardly wait.

Beer, silly costumes, and running: Tap ‘n’ Run comes to Jacksonville

tap n run Finish lineThe Riverside area of Jacksonville has had a long and storied history. It was one of Jacksonville’s original suburbs, it was home to numerous characters both notable and notorious, and, in more recent years, it has become the center of the Jacksonville beer renaissance. The area boasts one of the highest concentrations of beer-centric businesses in the entire city and is the location a six-block stretch of King Street known as the King Street Beer District. Thirsty beer-aficionados can also belly up to the bar in Five Points at such establishments as The Derby, O’Brother’s, and Black Sheep.

But, Jacksonville has never seen the likes of the beer event that will be taking place on April 13, at 2:00 p.m. That is when the streets will be filled with hundreds of beer drinkers running for the love of beer. Some will be running for the beer, some will be running to show off their wild side, and some will be running – well, no one is really sure why some folks run in this event.

Outrageous costumes, beer chugging and foot racing will reign supreme as the Tap ‘N’ Run 4K makes its inaugural tap in Jacksonville. Tap ‘N’ Run 4K combines participants’ love of beer and running for a unique “one of a kind” run/walk race totaling 2.4 miles throughout Riverside/Avondale. Participants are encouraged to dress in costumes and run with teams, friends and family of legal drinking age. A portion of the proceeds will benefit local charity Girls Gone Green fronted by local meteorologist Julie Watkins of Action News Jax on channels 47 and 30. The Girls Gone Green as a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to making a positive difference in animal treatment, an exploited planet and unhealthy eating habits.

Operated by Louisville, KY-based JAM Active, Tap ‘N’ Run encourages participants to run, jog, walk, hop, skip or crawl to three different “chug stations” along the course. The “chug stations” will have participants chugging a four-ounce sample of beer before continuing along the race route. At the finish line, participants will receive a full beer and the chance to win one of many awards (including Best Mustache, Best Belcher, Most Original Team Concept, Hot Mess, among others) at the After Party.

“This will mark Tap ‘N’ Run’s first time in Jacksonville, and so far, the response has been strong,” said Matt Roberts, JAM Active Executive Director. “The allure of the event, some say, is the uniqueness of being able to drink mid-run. Other races have beer at the end, but Tap ‘N’ Run provides it right along the race route. It’s a ridiculously good time with friends, family, costumes, teams and of course, beer.”

The run will begin at O’Brother’s Pub at 1521 Margaret Street near Five Points and continue north on Margaret to Gilmore where it will take a left turn. From there runners will head to Acosta where they will again turn left. Another left on Haldumar Terrace and a quick right on to Barrs. From there it is a four block jaunt to Hershel. A left on Hershel puts runner into the finish stretch and a cold beer into sight. At the end of the run, participants will again gather at O’Brother’s for an after party replete with prizes and more beer.

The organizers of the event have provided a discount code for readers of this blog. When you register and checkout use the code “FRIENDOFBEER” and you will receive $5 off your registration fee. You can register for the run at http://www.tapnrun.com/Jacksonville/Register.php.

Dress in your craziest outfit, strap on your running shoes and prepare for a jog around one of Jacksonville’s most beautiful neighborhoods. Tap ‘n’ Run brings together two activities that seem to be mutually exclusive – running and beer drinking. But, it also promises to be more fun than, well just running or just drinking beer.
