New Belgium Plans First East Coast Brewery in Asheville

06 Apr

Asheville, NC scores another major victory with the announcement yesterday that New Belgium, makers of the popular Fat Tire brew, will build their first east coast brewery there early next year. Coming quickly on the heels of an announcement by Sierra Nevada, yesterday’s announcement seems to solidify Asheville’s tenure as Beer City USA.

New Belgium is based in Fort Collins, CO and is ranked as the country’s third largest craft beer brewery and plans on bringing 154 jobs and investing $175 million over the next few years. The company plans on building a brewery, distribution warehouse, tasting room, and roof-top beer garden in Asheville.

Ground is expected to be broken early next year and to create over 1,200 construction jobs. The entire project will not be completed for as much as seven years. The economic impact to the area for the construction phase could reach $41 million.

The brewery expects to begin hiring staff by the end of 2014 and to begin production in the first quarter of 2015.
