If you are a craft beer aficionado and will go to great lengths to feed your habit, you will want to be in Denver, Colorado October 11-13. Those are the dates of this year’s edition of the Great American Beer Festival. Billed as the greatest selection of American craft beer assembled in one place ever, the festival expects to attract more than 49,000 avid beer fans over its three day run and four sessions.

Nearly 600 brewers will be represented at the festival sampling over 2,000 brews. To put that astounding number in to perspective; imagine attendee the festival with the intent to taste every beer available, the average sample size is two to three ounces, that works out to four to six thousand ounces of beer to consume or 250 to 375 pints. If you attend all four session—totaling 20.5 hours —of the festival you would have to drink nearly two samples per minute to try them all.

The festival, known as GABF, began in 1982 with only 22 breweries and 40 beers to taste at the Harvest House Hotel in Boulder, Colorado. Only 800 people attended the first event. Ten years later, in 1992, the festival moved to the Denver Merchandise Mart and had over 150 breweries, 500 beers, and 7,000 attendees.

At this year’s festival, attendees can do much more than just taste beer; there are multiple unique pavilions on topics ranging from Farm to Table, Craft Beer & Food, and Support Your Local Brewery. In addition attendees can learn to evaluate beer at the You Be the Judge Booth, purchase beer books at the Brewers Publication Bookstore, and learn the story behind their favorite brews at the Brewer’s Studio Pavilion.
