Jax Beer Society launches “Half Mash” scavenger hunt at Gastrofest

Jax Beer Society logoAs a kid, I loved scavenger hunts. There was something adventurous about getting a list of odd items to find and then headed of on the trail to find them. This spring, the Jax Beer Society has taken that idea and given it a beer-centric twist. Beginning at Gastrofest Saturday, March 19, 2016, hunters can seek out great beer in Jacksonville and, if they are crafty enough to tick off everything on their “to-find” list, score a couple of tickets to the Beer Society’s Jax Beer Week soiree Mash In.

Dubbed the “Half Mash,” the scavenger hunt has beer-lovers visiting each of the eight local craft breweries and three Associate Business Members to complete their list. At each stop hunters are to snap a photo with their smartphone in front of the Jax Beer Society poster. Then they are to post the image to social media and tag it with the hashtags: #jaxbeersociety #jaxaletrail #drinkitinjax.

Intrepid scavengers who complete the hunt by Thursday, March 31, 2016 will be rewarded for their skills with a pair of tickets to the Jax Beer Society Mash In on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Look for the Jax Beer Society tent at Gastrofest to get a “wild card” photo that can stand in for any one scavenger hunt photo. Enthusiasts can also pick up a pair of free bright red sunglasses that are sure to be all the rage at the event.

Hunters are encouraged to have fun – within the bounds of good taste – with their photos and, of course, enjoy a pint of good beer at each stop. The eight local breweries participating in the Half Mash include:

A list of Associate Business Members can be found on the Jax Beer Society website at: http://jaxbeersociety.com/members/.

Breaker, Breaker E-Street tapping special brews, showing classic movie

e-streetIn the history of cinema, there have been a few movies in which beer has played a central role. Cinematic masterpieces such as “Beerfest,” “Strange Brew,” and “Drinking Buddies” have graced the silver screen for years leaving beer-lovers thirsty for more. But, there has never been a beer movie of such epic proportions, such cultural relevance, such earth-shattering gravitas as “Smokey and the Bandit.”

The only thing better than watching Bandit out-smart Smokey is to watch it with a cold brew on an outdoor screen along with a gang of other beer-lovers. For those looking for this kind of experience, you are in luck! On Sunday, January 31 European Street Restaurant on Park Street in Riverside will host the second annual E-Street Movie Night.

To make the night particularly special, E-Street has decided to crack open a few special kegs, including:

  • Intuition Underdark 2015
  • Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA
  • Dogfish Head Higher Math
  • Lagunitas Bitter Oats

In keeping with the movie’s co-star – a truck load of a very specific beer – plenty of Coors Banquet beer will be available at just $2.00 per bottle. Oskar Blues’ Dale’s Pale Ale with also be offered at the astounding price of just $2.00 per can.

And, just to make it even more fun, Millie’s Famous Hot Barbecue will be onsite serving smoked pork sandwiches (get it?).

The movie starts at 7:00 p.m. and is free to anyone who wants to sit out and watch in under the stars. So, gather some beer-loving friends and make a convoy to Riverside. We’ll catch you on the flip side good-buddy.

Brews for Branches events at local breweries salutes Earth Day, Greenscape

brew_for_branchesLocal Jacksonville breweries Intuition ale Works, Aardwolf Brewing Company and Bold City Brewing Company have teamed up to celebrate Earth Day and honor Greenscape of Jacksonville with a three-part party, membership drive and fund-raiser.

The first event will take place on Thursday, April 23 – the day after Earth Day – at Intuition with a special keg tapping ceremony of a very special beer brewed in conjunction with Aardwolf specifically for the event.

“We brewed a single hop IPA with Simcoe hops,” said Andrew Cattell, head brewer at Intuition ale Works. The beer was also aged on oak to give it nutty, vanilla, caramel, coconut and wood flavors.

The drive for awareness and membership continues on Thursday, May 7 and Aardwolf Brewing Company in San Marco. Guests will have an opportunity to speak with Greenscape personnel while they once again enjoy the collaboration brew created especially for the event.

The final event of the series takes place at Bold City Brewing Company on Friday, May 15. Guests will have a final opportunity to support Greenscape and speak with members of the organization. They will also have one last chance to taste the delicious brew created especially for the event.

Greenscape began in 1975 as an organization dedicated to helping downtown Jacksonville and its surrounding neighborhoods become greener places to live. Today, the organization is credited with over 250,000 trees added to our local canopy. By working with the City of Jacksonville in an advisory capacity to establish the City’s Landscape Ordinance, serving on the Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee, JEA’s Tree Coalition, and the Keep Jacksonville Beautiful Commission, Greenscape continues to further the awareness of the importance of our tree canopy to the health and economic well-being of our community.
