Funky Buddha announces barrel-aged Living Barrel series

FB_Barrel-AgedFunky Buddha, the evil geniuses behind popular brews like Last Snow and Last Buffalo in the Park, has announced a new series of barrel-aged beers. The Living Barrel Series will feature beers aged in bourbon, rum, tequila, Chardonnay and Cabernet barrels among others.

“Like the spiraling growth of a tree’s branches,” says an unnamed source in the Funky Buddha press release. “So too are these beers transformed over time thanks to the maturation exclusively in oak wine and spirits casks. Unlike the ageless timber, these bottles are only available for a limited time.”

Over the years, the brewery has amassed an impressive 500 casks that previously held spirits and wine of many types. Currently, there are hundreds of barrels holding everything from stouts to saisons quietly aging to perfection. Samples of the beers are regularly drawn and tested to assess its progress and maturity.

The Living Barrel series will be released in 22 ounce bottles through Funky Buddha’s tap room with some of the beers will gong to distribution throughout Florida. The first bottles will release the end of July and beginning of August. Included in these releases are a Rum Barrel-Aged Pina Colada beer consisting of an imperial cream ale made with real pineapple and coconut and aged in Jamaican rum casks for months; and Vanilla Bourbon Barrel-aged Nikolai Vorlauf, an Imperial Russian Stout aged for nearly two years in Bourbon barrels with whole vanilla beans added to the barrel. A third release, Bourbon Barrel-Aged Dread Pirate Roberts (imperial stout with raspberries, chocolate, and coconut), will be released exclusively to Funky Buddha’s Imperial Club members in August If any bottles remain, a release to the public will be scheduled.

Future releases will include this year’s versions of Morning Wood and Last Buffalo in the Park along with others yet to be announced.

Funky Buddha plans to continue releasing special, barrel-aged brews into 2018 and beyond.

Florida brewery to release beer barrel-aged under water

marker48Barrel-aging has become a common treatment of beer at many breweries across the country. But, most breweries put the filled barrel in a cool, dark place to age, Not the folks at Marker 48 Brewing Company in Weeki Wachee, Fla. For the second time, the folks at Marker 48 have filled a Four Roses Bourbon barrel with their Double IPA and submerged it 48 feet below the surface of a freshwater spring.

Get all the details in the official press release below:

WEEKI WACHEE, Florida (April 25, 2017) — Myriad wonders exist in Florida’s freshwater springs that bubble to the surface along the state’s Nature Coast.

Shark’s teeth and other fossils from eons ago, when the state was mostly submerged under a saltwater sea. The slow, gentle and endangered West Indian manatees, who seek the warmth of the consistently 72-degree waters in the spring during the colder winter months.

And live mermaids, of course, who perform every day in the underwater theater at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in the tiny town of the same name, about an hour north of the Tampa Bay area.

Add one more wonder to that list: Beer.

For the second year in a row, Weeki Wachee’s own Marker 48 Brewing will sell to the public bottles of its Spring Release Double IPA that was transferred to Four Roses bourbon barrels and aged for about three weeks 48 feet deep in one of those freshwater springs, located on private property not far from the brewery.

In 2016, after a similar process, the Marker 48 staff transferred the inaugural Spring Release into bomber bottles for sale to the public. The bottles sold out quickly and were well-received by the craft beer community.

This year, about 400 bottles of the 10.9% ABV (alcohol by volume) 2017 Spring Release will go on sale at the brewery, 12147 Cortez Blvd., Weeki Wachee,  on Thursday, April 27, at noon.

There is a limit of two of the 750ml bottles per person, per day, while supplies last, and the cost is $20 per bottle. In addition, one sixtel keg of the beer will be tapped that day at noon for those who want to try the brew while it’s as fresh as possible.

For more information on the release, check the Marker 48 Facebook page, Twitter account, Instagram or call (352) 606-2509.

Founders adding new brews to barrel-aged lineup

frootwoodKicking off their 20th anniversary year, Founders will release Frootwood, a cherry ale aged in oak barrels that have previously held both bourbon and maple syrup, as the first release in their Barrel-Aged Series.

At the end of last year, Founders announced the early-2017 launch of a brand new series that celebrates their highly regarded barrel-aging program, which is responsible for popular beers like KBS and Backwoods Bastard. Throughout the year, they will be releasing six different barrel-aged beers, including KBS in April 2017 and Backwoods Bastard in November 2017. Frootwood leads off the series.

Frootwood is a cherry ale aged in oak barrels that have previously held both bourbon and maple syrup. Frootwood will be available in some states as early as January, with remaining states seeing it by February. Founders will release it in the taproom on January 13, 2017 and it will have a suggested retail price of $14.99/4-pack and $11.99/750mL bottle. The entire Barrel-Aged Series lineup will be offered in both 750mL bottles and 4-packs of 12oz bottles.

“A light-bodied cherry ale is probably not the first thing that comes to someone’s mind when they consider a barrel-aged beer,” said Co-Founder and President Dave Engbers. “We love playing with expectations and Frootwood is proof of that.”

Founders will announce the remaining three releases in the Barrel-Aged Series later in the year.
