Bold City reopened: let them drink beer!

bcb7Almost as soon as I pressed the publish button on my last blog post about Bold City Brewing Company’s closure at the hands of the Jacksonville fire marshal, the Times-Union published an updated article stating that the brewery was granted permission to reopen.

The problem, according to the newspaper article, stemmed from the brewery’s Thursday night practice of hosting brewery yoga. Because of the number of people that activity could draw, the building is not properly equipped according to fire codes.

With the understanding that no more than 40 patrons are to be allowed in the facility at a time, the fire marshal has approved the reopening of the tap room.

Susan Miller, co-owner of the brewery with her son, Brian, said the doors would be open to beer lovers at 3:00 p.m. Friday as usual.

Fire marshal shutters Bold City’s Rosselle Street tap room

bold_city_rosselleAfter a meteoric rise, the days of visiting a brewery tap room in Riverside may be over. Thursday, July 6 a Jacksonville city fire marshal made a visit to the Rosselle Street home of Bold City Brewing Company and promptly shut down the brewery’s long-open tap room.

The news broke through an email sent by co-owner Brian Miller. In the email Miller told of how the brewery had been inspected for the past eight years without a glitch. This year the marshal found an issue.

“The fire marshal,” Miller explained in his email. “Has determined that our original certificate of use does not allow us to operate our tap room that has been operating as is with zoning approval for nine years.”

Over the years since Bold City opened the first craft beer brewery in Jacksonville, the little tap room of the brewery has become a popular gathering place on Thursday through Saturday evenings. The tap room was so popular in fact that patrons often spilled over to a larger area in the brewery and out into the parking lot.

An article in the Friday, July 7 Jacksonville Times-Union quotes a city spokeswoman, Marsha Oliver, as saying there are a variety of violations. Violations other than the occupancy issue were not listed.

In his email, Miller promises to reopen the Rosselle tap room as soon as possible. He also asks supporters to visit Bold City’s new downtown tap room located at 109 East Bay Street.

Craft beer: A catalyst for neighborhood revitalization

Just a few months ago, I stood before members of the Jacksonville City Council several times to express my support for breweries that wanted to open in the Springfield National Historic District. I used my three minutes of speaking time to hammer some facts about the benefits of breweries to re-emerging neighborhoods like Springfield. My goal was to impress upon the voting members of the Land Use and Zoning (LUZ) committee how breweries across the country have been instrumental in the revitalization of communities.

In its article, “Craft beer’s big impact on small towns and forgotten neighborhoods,” published, June 13, online housing news site Curbed captures the same information I spoke of in an in-depth article.

The article, by Patrick Sisson, weaves a compelling tale of how breweries have brought new life to forgotten towns and neighborhoods across the country. It even holds Jacksonville’s King Street Beer District out as an example of an abandoned commercial district that has seen an amazing turn around due to craft beer and craft beer breweries.

For my research, I dug up numerous stories of down-trodden areas that were brought back to life when a craft beer brewery moved in. Notably — and also mentioned in the Curbed article — is the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio. Before Great Lakes Brewing Company set up shop in 1988, the neighborhood situated immediately west of the  Cuyahoga River, was a deteriorating district marred by abandoned buildings and plagued by drugs.

Today the Ohio City neighborhood is thriving with six breweries, shops, restaurants, night clubs and residential buildings. It is a prime example of the power or craft beer to bring people in to a neighborhood they would otherwise ignore. It illustrates how a brewery tap room can become a gathering spot that can serve as a catalyst for conversation about gentrification.

Today, in Jacksonville, we in the midst of a beer-fueled revitalization of multiple forgotten neighborhoods. The neighborhood known as Silvertown adjacent to Riverside and home of the city’s first craft brewery, Bold City Brewing Company, is seeing a rise in property values and an influx of new residents intent on restoring the historic homes and residing close to the bustling beer-centric nightlife hub of King Street.

Other local breweries such as Intuition Ale Works and Engine 15 Brewing Company have opted to utilize existing building stock in crumbling areas. Intuition took up residence in an old warehouse in the city’s Sports District nearly a year ago and has seen astounding success and growth because of the decision. Engine 15 bought a couple of warehouses in the crumbling LaVilla neighborhood. The addition of a small tap room at the brewery has seen an influx of suburbanites curious to visit the location.

In Springfield the addition of Hyperion Brewing Company on long neglected Main Street has already brought visitors from other parts of the city that had long eschewed the area. Soon, a new night club/restaurant, Crispy’s, will open providing another reason for outsiders to travel to the inner city. And, in late September or early October, Main & Six Brewing Company will join the other new-comers and older properties like Wafaa & Mike’s, Uptown Kitchen & Bar and  Tapas Old World.

With more breweries planned for the coming year, Jacksonville is poised to become the next great beer destination in Florida. One can only hope that they decide to settle in one of Jacksonville’s other abandoned districts to breathe life once again in to the Bold New City of the South.

3 new Bold City brews you must try at downtown tap room

bold_City_DTWhen I talked to Brian Miller, co-owner of Jacksonville’s first craft brewery, Bold City Brewing Company a few months ago about the just-opened downtown brewery and tap room, he told me that his vision was to rotate his brewers through the smaller brewery and let them exercise their creativity. This weekend we will get to reap the fruits of Jeremy Baker’s, one of the Bold City brewers, labors.

Beginning at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 26, Baker’s first brew — The George and the Dragon Oatmeal Stout — will be on tap. Then at 2:00 p.m., The Jam ESB will become available and finally, at 5:00 p.m., The Pryed of Frank and Stein Rye IPA will flow.

Inspiration for the new brews lean heavily towards Baker’s British roots. The name for his stout is drawn from visits to family in England as he grew up.

“The legal drinking age is lower there,”  Baker said in an email from Bold City. “So the first time I could legitimately drink a beer at a bar was just down the hill from my Grandparent’s house. The pub was named The George and the Dragon and George.

The combination of that early drinking experience and the fact that his grandfather’s name is George provided the inspiration for his rich, chocolate forward oatmeal stout. IN keeping with the U.K. theme of the beer, Baker utilized British Phoenix hops in this 5% ABV work of art.

For his 5.5% ABV The Jam ESB, Baker again turned to his British heritage by trying to create a traditional Engish-style pale ale. In this brew he balanced English two-row, mild malts and a touch of crystal/caramel malts with a variety English of hops.

“My goal with this one was to emulate what you would get if you were in an English pub and asked for a pint of bitter,” Baker explained. “This is one of the first styles of beer I fell in love with as a young man.”

The Pryed of Frank and Stein, Baker’s third beer to be released is an English-style IPA brewed with rye that clocks in at 7% ABV and has an American twist — he aggressively hopped the brew with a combination of spicy and earthy hops from the U.S. and Europe. Perhaps most interesting is the highlighted use of experimental hop, HBC 682 said to have a mild and pleasant aroma with herbal, floral and spicy characteristics. In addition, both English and American pale malts were sourced along with distinctive rye malt.

“The ingredients came from all over,” Baker said. “To create a Frankenstein of a beer.”

With Jazz Fest and the opening of Daily’s Place downtown this weekend, you may want to get to Bold City early to stake out a place and try all three of these new additions to the Bold City line up.

Applebee’s honors American Craft Beer Week with special Happy Hour

bdg_ACBW2016_lgAmerican Craft Beer Week is upon us and the number of activities to show your support is nothing less than amazing. One event that you may not have heard about, but should definitely look in to is the Craft Beer Happy Hour at Applebee’s in Bartram Park.

The Happy Hour will feature craft beer from “down the block, around the corner and across the country.” Guests will have an opportunity to choose from a range of beers from local breweries such as Bold City Brewing Company, Veteran’s United Craft Brewing and Intuition Ales Works in addition to brews from regional and national breweries like SweetWater Brewing Company, Sam Adams Brewing Company and Terrapin Beer Company.

Along with the great beer, guests can expect a DJ to be spinning tunes on the patio and opportunities to win fun beer-centric swag. In addition, representatives from Bold City Brewing Company will be on hand to talk about their beers and answer questions.

The Happy Hour takes place Thursday, May 19 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 14560 Old St. Augustine Road.

Bold City to release Vernon’s Pilsner in honor of deceased Jolly Mon

Vernon-Dean-Poster-Apr-2016-2Just a few years ago, if you pulled up to Bold City Brewing Company for a few pints you were met by the mingling aromas of boiling wort and meaty Jamaican-style wings. The smell of wort of course came from the hard-working brewers of Bold City, but the wings – oh, the wings! – that enticing aroma came from the Jolly Mon himself, Vernon Dean.

Dean was a Bold City fixture with his cooking station just inside the warehouse door of the brewery. Sadly, he passed away suddenly in January 2015. But, for those who had the opportunity to meet him, his rascally personality can never be forgotten.

To honor the man behind the legend, Bold City has created Vernon’s Pilsner. This, the first pilsner ever brewed by Bold City, is a golden in color and mildly bitter brew that matches the loveably offbeat temperament of Dean himself.

The beer will be released at a party in Dean’s honor on Saturday, April 2 beginning at 6:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m. the brewery staff will share a toast to the Jolly Mon with all who come to join in the festivities. In addition, Kustom Deluxe will entertain with its particular brand of music and La Bodega Original will serve paella during the event.

Bold City will also donate $1 from every pint sold to St. Johns  Riverkeeper, an organization that was close to Dean’s heart.

In addition, the JTA Night Trolly will make stops at Bold City.

Jax Beer Society launches “Half Mash” scavenger hunt at Gastrofest

Jax Beer Society logoAs a kid, I loved scavenger hunts. There was something adventurous about getting a list of odd items to find and then headed of on the trail to find them. This spring, the Jax Beer Society has taken that idea and given it a beer-centric twist. Beginning at Gastrofest Saturday, March 19, 2016, hunters can seek out great beer in Jacksonville and, if they are crafty enough to tick off everything on their “to-find” list, score a couple of tickets to the Beer Society’s Jax Beer Week soiree Mash In.

Dubbed the “Half Mash,” the scavenger hunt has beer-lovers visiting each of the eight local craft breweries and three Associate Business Members to complete their list. At each stop hunters are to snap a photo with their smartphone in front of the Jax Beer Society poster. Then they are to post the image to social media and tag it with the hashtags: #jaxbeersociety #jaxaletrail #drinkitinjax.

Intrepid scavengers who complete the hunt by Thursday, March 31, 2016 will be rewarded for their skills with a pair of tickets to the Jax Beer Society Mash In on Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Look for the Jax Beer Society tent at Gastrofest to get a “wild card” photo that can stand in for any one scavenger hunt photo. Enthusiasts can also pick up a pair of free bright red sunglasses that are sure to be all the rage at the event.

Hunters are encouraged to have fun – within the bounds of good taste – with their photos and, of course, enjoy a pint of good beer at each stop. The eight local breweries participating in the Half Mash include:
