Brew Hub plans expansion, adds new breweries to portfolio

brewhubBrew Hub, the company that could be called a grand experiment in craft brewing is proving that the experiment is an unqualified success as it announces expansion plans and the acquisition of two more clients. The company grew from an idea conceived of by former Anhueser-Busch executive Tim Schoen and opened for business just over a year ago. It billed itself as “Where Craft Brewers Go to Grow.” And, with the growth of its own portfolio along with those of its clients, Brew Hub has certainly made good on its promise. With the addition of new partnerships with JDub’s Brewing Company of Sarasota, Fla., and M.I.A. Brewing Company of Miami, Fla., Brew Hub adds to a client list that includes Tampa’s Cigar City and Brew Bus brewing companies as well as Green Man Brewing out of Asheville, NC. And several others.

Brew Hub’s 64,000 square-foot Lakeland brewery opened September 2014. The brewery had an initial brewing capacity of 60,000 barrels, or nearly 1 million cases, annually. The expansion will increase the brewery’s capacity to 100,000 barrels, or 1.4 million cases, annually. In addition to its home brands, Brew Hub brews beer for partners Cigar City, BJ’s Restaurants, Toppling Goliath, Green Man, Orange Blossom, GolfBeer and Brew Bus.

“We designed the brewery with expansion in mind. We hoped this day would come – it just arrived sooner than we could have ever imagined,” said Tim Schoen, CEO of Brew Hub. “The expansion proves the model we built to help craft brewers grow is working. We’re excited to continue helping our partners grow as we expand, and we welcome the opportunity to add quality brewers like JDub’s and M.I.A. to our team.”

During its first 12 months of operation, Brew Hub expanded its bottling line and installed a new, state-of-the-art canning line to handle increased demand. In January, the company will install new bright beer tanks, increasing packaging capacity by 64 percent. In February, the company will add eight new fermentation tanks, increasing fermentation and conditioning capacity by 60 percent.

At the one year anniversary festival in September I was fortunate enough to get a guided tour. The brewery is a testament to modern brewing science and is immaculately clean. A massive brewhouse dominates one side of the cavernous room while fermenters line the other. As we walked, Brew Hub’s chief of brewing operations, Jim “Otto” Ottolini, hinted at the idea of expansion, but never fully revealed the plan.

“With these additions,” Ottolini said in a press release about the expansion. “Brew Hub can brew and package an additional 40,000 barrels of beer in 2016.”

Brew Hub provides full brewing, packaging, distribution and selling services for craft brands that are constrained by capacity, geography or capital. Due to high demand, Brew Hub’s brewing capacity has been sold out since July 2015. The expansion allows for an increase in production for all existing partners and the opportunity to add new partner brewers. The expansion also is needed to meet projected growth for 2016.

Brew Hub hosting anniversary beer fest

brewhubA year ago an interesting concept in the craft beer community came to fruition. Brew Hub, an idea conceived of by a former Anhueser-Busch executive, opened for business. Billed as a “Where Craft Brewers Go to Grow,” Brew Hub was founded to provide brewers who are operating at or above capacity additional facilities to meet their expanding needs.

To celebrate their first year of collaborative brewing, Brew Hub is planning an inaugural craft beer fest  om Saturday, October 3 at its Lakeland, Fla. brewery. The event is dubbed Harbinger Fest and will feature more than 100 craft beers from across the country. In addition, guests will enjoy live music, food trucks and local retail vendors.

“We are fortunate to be a part of the Florida craft beer community, and Harbinger Fest will be a celebration of all things craft beer,” said Harbinger Fest director Bayé Perry. “We have an amazing lineup of craft beer from Florida and from brewers across the country, so there will be something for everyone to enjoy.”

The festival begins at noon for VIP ticket holders and at 1 p.m. for general admission ticket holders. VIP tickets cost $75 ($80 day of) and will give participants unlimited sampling of more than 100 beers, access to the indoor Tasting Room and bottle-share event, light appetizers, a festival t-shirt and the ability to purchase limited release beers. General admission tickets cost $35 ($40 day of) and include unlimited sampling of more than 100 craft beers and access to the festival grounds. Designated driver tickets are available for $10. General admission/transportation tickets that include chartered bus transportation to and from Tampa Bay along with general admission to the festival are available for $60.

More than 25 local and national breweries will attend, including Cigar City, Orange Blossom Brewing, Toppling Goliath and Green Man Brewing. Live music will be performed by local bands The Dan Signor Project, Shevonne Philidor and Ben Prestage. Beer-themed concessions will be available for purchase from a variety of local food trucks, including Trucktoberfest, Mobile Munchiez and LizzieCakes.

A “harbinger” is someone who initiates a major change or a signal foreshadowing the future. The festival aims to be an annual event for beer enthusiasts and a harbinger of America’s next great beers and the brewers behind them.

Brew Hub opens first brewery in Lakeland

_MG_4119Brew Hub, a company led by a team of beer industry executives and craft-brewing experts, has opened its first brewery in Lakeland, Fla. The 50,000 square-foot brewery is the first of a network of five new, state-of-the-art craft breweries the company is planning to build that will offer craft brewers the opportunity to partner brew their beers on site.

Partner brewing is a process that allows craft breweries to brew their beer to exact specifications under the supervision of their own brewmaster, and to package and distribute from Brew Hub. Brew Hub also offers its partners services including sales, marketing, logistics, legal, and government affairs. Partner brewing allows craft brewers to expand their distribution without the overhead costs of building a new brewery or the complexity of contract brewing at third-party facilities.

“It’s an exciting time to be in the craft beer industry. There are so many craft brewers making amazing beer and the demand from consumers is almost insatiable – especially in Florida,” said Brew Hub CEO Tim Schoen. “The opening of our first craft brewery in Lakeland is significant because our partner model will allow many of these craft brewers the opportunity to expand their business and reach new consumers throughout the Southeast and beyond.”

The Lakeland brewery is located in Interstate Commerce Park off the I-4 Corridor and has an initial brewing capacity of 75,000 barrels, or one million cases, annually. The site’s central location will allow the company to efficiently distribute beer to wholesalers throughout Florida and the Southeast.

The Lakeland location features a 3,000-foot tasting room and patio. The brewery also will offer merchandise and brewery tours. Brew Hub will employ approximately 30 people at its Lakeland brewery in brewing, operations, front office and its tasting room.

Brew Hub currently has partnerships with several award-winning craft brewers, including Cigar City Brewing, Orange Blossom Pilsner, Green Man Brewing and BJ’s Restaurants (Nasdaq: BJRI). Brew Hub partner brews beer for all four companies at the Lakeland brewery.
Brew Hub also plans to brew the Brew Hub Craft Collection, a series of distinctive craft beers created by the company.

Brew Hub plans to open four more breweries during the next five years. Specific markets will be determined based on demand, but the company is considering strategic locations in the Midwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Texas and West Coast regions. This network of Brew Hub facilities will allow craft brewers from across the country to enter new markets.

Brew Hub was founded by a team of beer industry executives led by CEO Tim Schoen and Brew Hub President Jerry Mullane. Brew Hub’s financial sponsor is a private investment firm, The Yucaipa Companies.

Brew Hub Announces Partnership with Cigar City, Orange Blossom Pilsner and BJ’s Restaurants

BrewHubIn an update on a story we brought you some time ago, Brew Hub, the regional brewery project led by former executives at ABinBev, has announced partnerships with several Florida breweries and a major beer-centric restaurant chain.

Read all the details in their press release below:

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Brew Hub, a company led by a team of beer industry executives and craft brewing experts, has announced partnerships with three award-winning craft brewers: Cigar City Brewing; Orange Blossom Pilsner; and BJ’s Restaurants (Nasdaq: BJRI).

Brew Hub will partner brew beer for all three companies at its new, state-of-the-art craft brewery in Lakeland, Fla. beginning May 2014. Brew Hub will brew a variety of beer brands for each company and distribute the beer throughout Florida and eventually other southeastern states.

Partner brewing is a process that allows craft brewers not only to brew their beer to exact specifications under the supervision of their own brewmaster, but also to package and distribute from the Brew Hub brewery and make their beer available for export to international markets. Partner brewing allows craft breweries to expand their distribution without the overhead costs of building a new brewery or transporting beer across the country. Brew Hub also offers services including sales, marketing, logistics, compliance and government affairs.

“These guys know what they are doing, and I am excited for the opportunity to be able to grow Cigar City Brewing without sacrificing quality or compromising the brewing process,” said Joey Redner, Cigar City Brewing founder and CEO. “When you combine Brew Hub’s experience with a new state-of-the-art craft brewery in our home state of Florida, we knew this partnership could help us get more Cigar City beer into the hands of people who love it.”

“The partnerships we’ve formed with Cigar City, Orange Blossom Pilsner and BJ’s Restaurants are exactly why we formed our company,” said Tim Schoen, founder and CEO of Brew Hub. “All three brew amazing craft beer, but they simply can’t meet the overwhelming consumer demand. Partnering with Brew Hub will allow these award-winning craft brewers to brew more beer and increase their distribution which will allow them to grow much more quickly.”

Brew Hub will brew approximately 40,000 barrels of beer for the three partners combined. The Lakeland brewery will have an annual capacity of 75,000 barrels, or one million cases. The Florida brewery will be the first of five breweries Brew Hub plans to open across the country. All will allow craft brewers the opportunity to partner brew their beers on site.
“With these three agreements in place we are sold out for 2014, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Schoen. “Our focus will now be on expanding our brewing capacity at our Lakeland brewery, and announcing the next two breweries we plan to open.”
The Lakeland brewery is located in Interstate Commerce Park off the I-4 Corridor. The brewery will also feature a 3,000-square-foot tasting room where consumers can enjoy the beers being brewed by any of Brew Hub’s partners. The site’s central location will allow the company to efficiently distribute beer to wholesalers throughout Florida and the Southeast.

Brew Hub brewing operations will be led by Chief Brewmaster, Dr. Paul Farnsworth, who is overseeing all aspects of design, layout, construction and day-to-day operation of the new brewing, production and warehouse facility in Lakeland, Florida. Farnsworth earned a bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of London and has been instrumental in the startup or operation of over 100 breweries in 10 countries.

Lakeland, Fla. to be home to first Brew Hub contract brewing brewery

BrewHub

Florida will soon become home of a new concept in beer brewing – a dedicated brewery for hire facility called Brew Hub. The model is not dissimilar to contract brewing, a practice in the brewing industry of brewing another brewery’s beer using excess capacity. This allows a brewer in another part of the country to break into a market without straining their existing facility to do so.

The new company was founded by a former Anheuser-Busch executive and is based in a western suburb of St. Louis. The first of the company’s planned breweries is planned for Lakeland, Fla. along the I-4 corridor perfectly positioned for easy distribution throughout Florida and the Southeast. The new facility will offer all the amenities of a large commercial brewery with the ability to brew beer to demanding specifications. The company has even hired a brewmaster of impressive pedigree to watch over the process, Paul Farnsworth.

According to the company’s website, the Lakeland brewery is already under construction, but now completion date is listed. It does provide that the plant will have an annual capacity of 75,000 barrels along with full packaging, laboratory, marketing and distribution support.
