Dahlia’s Pour House to celebrate three years

Dahlias (5)My how time does fly! It seems like just yesterday Dahlia’s Pour House located in the King Street Beer District (even though it is actually on Post Street) of Jacksonville, Fla. The saloon, owned by a spunky and spirited woman, opened with 85 beer taps, a good-natured thumb of the nose at nearby Kickbacks Gastropub that had 84 at the time. Next month, on July 11, 2015, the popular watering hole celebrates its third anniversary with a full day of special beers including a Dahlia’s exclusive brew.

From the beginning, Dahlia’s was always about having a variety of brews to drink and activities to keep patrons entertained. The bar is filled with pool and ping pong tables, a beer pong table sits near a window as well as the first Beertleship game (think Battleship but with shots of beer instead of pegs). Dahlia’s has always been about sharing great beer with friends in a fun-filled, relaxing environment.

For its third anniversary, an unbelievable lineup of beers has been put together with an hourly $4 specials on selected beers. In addition, several breweries will have representatives present to help liven up the celebration with giveaways and special brews.

The schedule for the party so far is:

Highlights of the hourly specials include a special beer brewed by Big Top Brewing Company specifically for Dahlia’s with prickly pear. Cigar City Brewing Company will also be providing some special brews including Seasonal Creep Chocolate-Covered Pumpkin, Guayabera and Minaret on nitro.

In addition, Dahlia’s has secured five bottles of Dogfish Head’s legendary 120-Minute IPA. The bottles will be given away to the first five patrons that order two Dogfish Head beers. There is a strict one-bottle-per-person limit on this highly-sought brew.

Dahlia’s Pour House to celebrate two year anniversary

dahlias1It seems like just yesterday that my friend Andrea told me about her desire to open a beer bar of her own in Riverside. After much hard work and more than one setback, her dream came to fruition nearly two years ago in the form of Dahlia’s Pour House in the King Street Beer District.

To celebrate the momentous occasion of two years in business, Andrea and the entire staff of the Pour House are throwing a day-long bash on Saturday, July 12. For the celebration, a line-up of activities has been released including:

• First 50 guests will receive a free Dahlia’s coozie. After those are gone, guests can purchase a coozie for just $1.
• Each hour a different Florida Brewery will be featured with $4 drafts.
• For every two (2) Dogfish Head beers purchased, guests will receive one (1) raffle ticket for a chance to win one of 12 Dogfish Head 120-minute IPA bottles. Loyalty club members get a free raffle entry.
• Free beer swag throughout the night.
• Free Champagne toast for everyone with staff and the owner at 5:00 p.m.
• Coaster Flip Contest at 6:00 p.m. — House cash to top two finishers.

Dahlia’s to host “Running of the Taps” Friday

There is a cliched, but common saying among adventurers; why did you climb (or raft, or motorcycle, or whatever) Mt. Everest (or the Colorado River, or the Dragon’s Tail, or whatever)? The simple answer is nearly always; because it was there. Intrepid beer-drinkers now have a challenge designed to test their mettle happening at the newly opened Dahlia’s Pour House in Riverside. It is being called the “Running of the Taps” and is a beer-drinking session that involves drinking every one of the 85 beers Dahlia’s has on tap.

The event is the brain-child of craft beer lover Tony Sottile. “I just wanted to have a session event with a few close friends,” he said. “But figured there are probably a few more degenerates like myself that would enjoy this as well. And what better way to meet other said degenerates [than to] go have a beer or twenty.”

Those who take up the challenge will not find themselves facing 85 full pints or beer, though. The challenge will be to drink 85, four ounce servings of beer presented in flights of four beers. Still, the grand total of beer to be consumed by each participant who completes the challenge comes out to 340 ounces, or roughly 21 pints.

The event is to take place over a span of about eight to nine hours, so it equates to about two or so pints an hour. To keep the participants nourished – and perhaps a little more sober – Dahlia’s is springing for food during a couple of sustenance breaks.

Sottile says of the event, “We want to cap it at no more than 15-20 people. We’re really only looking to get guys [and] girls together that truly enjoy beer, talk beer and [want to] meet others that enjoy the same.  We aren’t really interested in people showing up just to get hammered.”

The event will take place on Friday, July 27 at Dahlia’s Pour House (2695 Post Street) in the King Street Beer District beginning at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $100 per person.

Dahlia’s Pour House rocking on King Street

A little over a week after opening, Dahlia’s Pour House in the King Street Beer District is rocking. Even with several opening problems like the loss of a keg and draft line issues Dahlia’s has succeeded in completely a strong opening week that saw crowds filling in to check the new place out.

Dahlia’s is situated in a former printing shop just off the corner of King and Post in Riverside. The area has seen an explosion of new businesses opening, many with a heavy craft beer bent. To many, the area is the place to go in Jacksonville for a variety of venues within walking distance of each other that feature quality craft beers.

With 85 tap lines, Dahlia’s is the leader in the number of draft beers available in the District. Andrea, the owner and frequent bartender at the new joint, has committed to an emphasis on Florida brews and has an extensive collection including lesser-known beers from Cocoa Beach Brewing and Pensacola Bay Brewing. The pub is painted a cheerful red with high ceilings, attractive lighting, and the requisite beer signs. Behind the bar, the taps line up seemingly forever on the side of the cooler which has been painted with chalk board paint to allow for notes and specials to be written on it. Patrons looking for activities can play ping pong, shoot pool on one of the two $1 pool tables, play darts with real steel-tipped darts, or play Beer Battleship.

Beginning this Tuesday and continuing every Tuesday afterwards, the bar will host a pint night featuring a different brewery each week. Patrons that come in and order a pint of beer from the featured brewery will receive a logo pint glass that is theirs to keep. The night is modeled after the extremely popular pint nights held at the Flying Saucer chain of beer bars. The special pint nights are from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Brewers or representatives from the breweries will also be present to answer questions about their beers.

The first few breweries to be featured are:

July 17th – Green Room Brewery
July 24th – Bold City Brewery. Drink with the Killer Whale (and get your picture with it, too) at 6:00 p.m.
July 31st – Swamp Head Brewery

Dahlia’s Pour House to Open Today at Post and King

It has been a long, difficult road fraught with hurdles of every imaginable variety for Dahlia’s Pour House. But, after multiple format changes the owners finally reached an agreement with the neighborhood and city that allowed them to move forward with opening their establishment. They pared down their desire to open a full-liquor bar with a restaurant component to opening just a beer bar. But, what a beer bar it is!

The newest edition to the King Street Beer District will open with 85 taps of cold, delicious brews and room for expansion to over 200. The same team that runs Northstar Substation, the popular pizza and beer joint on Bay Street downtown, has worked hard to put together a list of quality beers to keep quaffers happy. Included is an extensive collection of Florida brews for the likes of Pensacola Brewing, Florida Brewing, and locals Bold City, Intuition, and Green Room. You will also find craft beers from Victory, Sweetwater, and Dogfish Head in addition to  import selections like Leffe, Hoegaarden, and Stella.

But, bellying up to the bar is not the only thing to do at Dahlia’s. There are two pool tables, dart boards, televisions, and a rather unique drinking game that has never been seen before in this area: Beer Battleship. The premise of the game is the same as the children’s board game, but on a larger scale and instead of adding a peg to a “hit” on your ship players will have beer shots on their ships. When a player’s opponent calls the coordinates of one of his or her ships, they must drink that beer shot.

If all that is not enough, Dahlia’s will also offer package sales of canned beers, though they cannot sell growlers. There are also plans in the works for a running and cycling club based on successful models in the Tampa Bay area.

Dahlia’s hours are 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. daily and is located at 2695 Post Street in Riverside.
