Update: World of Beer now plans February opening for Jax store

Back in September an article appeared here about the planned opening of the first Jacksonville World of Beer store (see link below). Today, in an article to the Florida Times-Union blog Amber Waves, Roger Bull reports that the new opening date is estimated to be February of 2013. This seems to make sense since on a recent visit there did not appear to be any site improvements underway. The only indication that anything would happen was a sign that touted the old Starbucks in Tinseltown as the future home of World of Beer.

Bull also reports that the Tinseltown location will not be the only Jacksonville location for the chain that now operates 31 locations in 10 states. According to the article, there could be as many as four more locations planned for the First Coast.

Free Beer from Bold City, All You Have to do is Find Them

It is sure to be a “Whale of a Summer” for Bold City Brewery lovers as they launch their summer tour and give away plenty of free pints, pint glasses, and T-shirts. In an article on the Amber Waves beer blog of the Florida Times-Union, Ed Stansel advises followers to keep an eye on Twitter for stops on the tour today through Thursday, June 7.

According to the article, “On Tuesday, they’ll be hitting businesses in Riverside and Deerwood. Wednesday, you’ll find them in Fernandina Beach. And Thursday, they’ll be visiting Orange Park, Ortega, Riverside and Murray Hill.”

The gang from Bold City will Tweet their location approximately 10 minutes prior to arrival on Twitter and will stay at each location for 45 minutes. Ten lucky customers at each location will receive Killer Whale pint glasses or T-shirts. In addition, the brewery crew will buy pints of Killer Whale for patrons at each stop.

Killer Whale Cream Ale is one of the breweries most popular brews and has been a mainstay in their tap room nearly from its opening. Cream ales were originally brewed to compete with lagers in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast portions of the United States. They are generally light in color, low in hop bitterness and maltiness; they are generally crisp and smooth on the palate. Killer Whale falls squarely into these characteristics and is a satisfying brew perfect for hot, humid Florida afternoons.

Engine 15 is on Fire with Beer Week Events

Jacksonville Beer Week Starts tomorrow and, as I have written before, there are a whole slew of events taking place all over town. One of the many venue that will be celebrating this week is Engine 15 on Beach Blvd. in Jacksonville Beach.

The guys and gals at E15 are not only awesome hosts and hostesses, but they also have a great line-up of brew specials for Jax Beer Week. Be sure to visit them this week for awesome beer and great food!

Wednesday, April 4

A special beer food pairing is in the works matching Engine 15’s Oak Aged Simcoe Imperial IPA with steam burger sliders and coconut rice for only $10. Yum!

Thursday, April 5

Ed Stansel and Roger Bull have been writing about beer for the Florida Times Union on their Amber Waves blog for several years now. They are not only authorities on drinking good beers, but now they are delving into making good beer. A few weeks ago they visited E15 to experience the Brew-It-Yourself aspect of Engine 15. On Thursday they will be tapping the beer they brewed – named Amber Waves, of course. It’s a hoppy Double Amber. All proceeds benefit the St. Johns Riverkeeper – you can’t make good beer without good water, right?!

Friday, April 6

Jax Beer Tap Takeover at The Engine! Seventeen local Jax beers including…five Engine 15 beers on tap + one Engine 15 in a Firkin + Engine 15 Old Battle Axe through the Randall! And ten beers from Intuition, Bold City & Green Room. You might just find yourself in Jax beer Nirvana!

Visit the Engine this week and help support local beer!

Kickback’s Expansion Details

The King Street corridor in the Riverside/Avondale has become a real beer destination. With two breweries, Pele’s Wood Fire boasting 50 taps, Kickback’s with 84 taps, European Street, Dahlia’s Pour House opening soon with 50 taps, and at least two other destinations opening soon, if you cannot find a good beer to drink in that area, you are not trying very hard.

A few months ago, I wrote about the Sierra Nevada Beer Dinner held at Kickback’s. I also mentioned that during that dinner Steve Flores, the owner of Kickback’s, announced his plans for a new restaurant to the immediate left of his current establishment. Today the Florida Times-Union is running an article on their website — — about the new eatery with details that sound very interesting indeed.

The main article at the link above details a controversy going on with Riverside Avondale Preservation. I will not go into that here; you can read that part of the article if you want. But, the new place Steve has planned does sound amazing. I cannot wait to claim my throne in the Belgian bar.

Roger Bull, of the Times-Union writes this about the new place:

Here’s what the owners have planned for the new restaurant next door to Kickbacks Gastropub:

Two stories and a basement for a total of about 10,000 square feet, with a kitchen that Kickbacks will share.

It’ll have 249 seats. Seventy-six of the seats will be outside, including 24 on the sidewalk and 52 on the front covered patio.

The basement will be a Belgian beer bar with 50 seats.

The food, Steve Flores said, will have “75 items from around the world that haven’t been seen much on a menu in Jacksonville.”

He mentioned five flavors of moules-frites (that’s mussels and fries for those who haven’t seen it on a menu before) along with vegetarian and vegan dishes.

Much of the emphasis will be on beer. Kickbacks already has 84 on draft and more than 600 in bottles.

The downstairs bar will be for serious sipping and there will be storage for 1,000 kegs.

“I don’t think Dogfish 120 should be served until it’s at least five years old,” Flores said, “so I’ll store it at least that long.”

For me, this place cannot open fast enough! The food sounds awesome – true Belgian fare in Jacksonville? Yes please! A dedicated Belgian basement? It may be in a basement, but – as a Belgian beer lover and some say expert – it will be heaven for me.

Jacksonville is growing up. We are finally getting the kinds of restaurants and entertainment options other cities have enjoyed for years. And, as far as beer culture, we are nearly afloat in it.
