Jax Beer Week 2014, Tuesday, May 27

jax_beer_week_2014Day three of Jax Beer Week and things are really heating up! Today’s events include special releases and tappings in a number of locations. Check back every day this week for listings of what is happening and where. Also, follow our social media feeds for more up-to-the-minute information. You can access our feeds from www.JaxBeerGuy.com.

Green Room Brewing Company
Beaches area beer-lovers have been flocking to Green Room Brewing Company since surfer-turned-brewer Eric Lumen opened the doors. His inviting and comfortable tap room is always full of lively conversation whether the surf is up or not. And then there is the beer, Green Room is home to a number of innovative brews that are sure to please the palates of the most discriminating beer aficionado.

For Jax Beer Week, Green Room will tap two special brews. The first of the two is Dawn Patrol, a breakfast stout with lactose, oats, vanilla, coffee, and cocoa nibs.

Intuition Ale Works
Tucked away in a building that bares more than a passing resemblance to a grey and foreboding prison, Intuition Ale Works has been creating beer alchemy for over three years. Owner and brewer Ben Davis has a fanatic following that is as passionate about beer as it is about supporting the community. A trait that is common to all of the local Jacksonville breweries but, due to the efforts of Davis and his general manager Cari Sanchez-Potter, Florida politicians are kept on their toes and local charities know they have a partner.

For Jax Beer Week the King Street Beer District anchor has decided to release a different one-off, or one time release beer, per day. The first is listed below, look for the rest listed on the day of the week they will be released.

Tap Room Release – Hopped-Up Saison

Pinglehead Brewing Company/Brewer’s Pizza
Taproom release – Pinglehead Banana Pancakes ale.

The Blind Fig Gastropub
A relative new-comer to the King Street Beer District, The Blind Fig has been wowing taste buds since their beginnings as a popular local food truck. Now, with a premier spot on the corner of King Street and College Street, the gastronomical wizards at the eatery are planning a Cigar City Brewing Company beer cocktail for happy hour.

European Street Café – Park Street
A Riverside, Park Street tradition for years, the European Street Café is also the go-to place for excellent craft and import beers. Under the watchful eye of Andy Zarka, E-Street serves a wide variety of German, Belgian and other import beers along with some of the best American craft beers. And, with a happy hour that runs from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily – even on the weekends – that features two-for-one brews, how can you go wrong?

For Jax Beer Week, E-Street will be tapping White Oak Aged Jai Alai from Cigar City at approximately 6:00 p.m. Stop by and visit with the folks from Cigar City, enjoy a pint and keep the glass!

The Silver Cow
The newest addition to the King Street Beer District is the love child of fellow beer blogger Regina Heffington, a.k.a. The Jax Brew Bitch. With a classy, yet approachable feel, this new lounge features approximately 20 taps of nothing but the best craft beers and hard ciders. But, on a street full of beer bars what is the main draw for this soon-to-expand hideaway? Some would say the Heffington’s infectious and somewhat raucous laugh, others might say the Cajun-infused small plates she serves from the tiny kitchen in the back. Whatever your reason, be sure to swing by to experience her place and make your own decision.

The Cow will feature a Cigar City Tap Takeover starting at 6:00 p.m. offering several brews from the Tampa brewery that have never before been available in Jacksonville.

The Jax Beer Guy has partnered with the UBER car service in Jacksonville. Because of this partnership, you can receive a $20 credit for your first ride by simply using the promo code “JaxBeerGuy” when you register for UBER on your smartphone.

Beaches Summer Fest set to heat up Jax Beach for MDA

Beer folk are known for their generosity. Often you can find them discussing new beers and offering to buy a pint for conversation mates. Tables of beer lovers frequently purchase rounds for each other to share the fun and show their love for each other. They are also known for their willingness to adopt a good cause and work towards raising money to help it along. Earlier this year we saw the Jacksonville Craft and Import Beer Festival benefit the Southside Business Men’s Club and this weekend you can drink for a cause again at the Beaches Summer Fest for MDA.

Now in its second year, the festival is a described by its creator, Jamie Gillis, as, “A very unique event with no crowds, and direct access to the brewers, chefs, and proprietors in a spacious oceanfront venue.” Entry to the event is limited to 300 with tickets purchased in advance. If there any tickets left on the day of the event, they will be available at the door. But, Gillis says that is unlikely. “This is a sell-out event,” he says due to the venue and charitable cause.

The ‘Fest will feature beer from local Florida breweries including Intuition Ale Works, Bold City, Green Room, Pinglehead, Engine 15, Three Palms, St. Somewhere, and Swamp Head. For those you prefer, wine will be served by Royal Palms Wine & Tapas as well.

Beaches and other area restaurants will also be highlighted at the event. Look for heavy hors d’oeuvres creations from North Beach Bistro, Engine 15 Brewing Company, Joseph’s Pizza, Alley Cakes, On The Fly Catering, Grassroots Natural Market, and Brewer’s Pizza.

Music to keep your toes tapping for the ‘Fest will be provided by Firewater Tent Revival and Paxton & Mike Acoustic Duo.

In addition to the food, drink, and music, the event will also feature a silent auction with local works of art for sale and other great items.

Discounted overnight stays for the event are available from the Courtyard by Marriott or the adjacent Fairfield Suites. Room rates start at $149 for the Courtyard and $99 for the Fairfield with $10 of each room rate going to the MDA. To reserve a room go to: http://cwp.marriott.com/jaxjv/beachessummerfest/.

This year’s ‘Fest is set for Saturday, Sept. 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott Oceanfront in Jacksonville Beach. Tickets are $40 in advance. To purchase tickets or get more information go to the event Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/beachessummerfest.

Jax St. Paddy’s Parties All Over Town

Top o’ the morning to you, faith and Begorrah, erin go bragh and any other Irish cliché you can think of is sure to be part of the vernacular tomorrow as the world celebrates St. Patrick’s Day. Known as the biggest drinking holiday of the year, surpassing New Year’s Eve and Oktoberfest, this holiday always brings out the leprechaun in all of us.

Pull on your favorite green outfit, swear to stay away from green beer (its just not natural!), and set out for one of dozens of St. Paddy’s celebrations throughout the area. Here’s a list to help you find some of the best parties and happenings:

Brewer’s Pizza in Orange Pak opens at noon and is offering a number of Irish and Irish-style brews (try the Pinglehead Red) and traditional Irish stew to go with the brews.

Engine 15 at the beach will be serving a selection of Irish-style brews as well tomorrow. Get there early and expect a lively crowd of revelers dressed in green to greet you.

European Street at the beach is throwing a St. Paddy’s party featuring Irish folk band Meridian. Be one of the first 100 people to arrive and receive free 20oz Killian’s Irish Beer dimpled mug. Fill your mug with $2 Killian’s and be in the running for schwag all day! The other E-street locations will feature the same beer specials and giveaways as well.

The Jacksonville Landing is offering a whole slate of events all weekend to celebrate the wearing o’ the green. On Friday night the Courtyard hosts the Hooter’s Green Bikini contest and live music from The Ride. Saturday, plan on a day of Irish music and dancing, green beer, and a green fireworks display to end the day.

Fionn MacCool’s at The Landing opens at 8:00 AM Saturday for a traditional Irish breakfast and great beer specials the rest of the day. You can be sure that there will be plenty of Irish music and fun to go with the huge selection of tap beers to be found at this great pub, too.

Green Room at Jax Beach opens at noon on Saturday and has their own version of an Irish Red – Irish Red Tide – on tap and ready to quench thirsty partiers at the beach,

Bold City Brewery will be tapping its Irish Red Ale at 1:00 PM to get the party rolling. The party doesn’t end there, though. There will also be a flip cup tournament, Irish stew from their on-site caterer, and a performance by The North Florida Emerald Society Pipes & Drums at 6:30.

Lynch’s Irish Pub in Jacksonville Beach is throwing the granddaddy of all St. Paddy’s parties with stages both inside and outside the popular pub. I suggest you get there early and wear your party shoes.

O’Brother’s Irish Pub in Riverside is hosting a street party in conjunction with Folio Magazine that will feature an outdoor food court, five bars, live music, and loads of shenanigans. The party starts at 2:00 PM and goes all night!

The Tilted Kilt will be also be putting on a street party in Tinseltown featuring live music, plenty of beer, and the best looking, kilt wearing servers anywhere in the city.

Intuition Ale Works, puts The Red Man Irish red on tap at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Riverside brewery will also feature on-site St. Paddy’s Day T-shirt production.

With a list like this, you should have no difficulty finding an event to attend. Just be sure to wear your green and drink responsibly.

Jax Brew Bus Shuttling Beer Lovers to Local Breweries

Often when one door closes another opens. Three college buddies dreamt of owning their own brewery. After drinking the vapid brews put out the monster mega breweries, they had tasted craft beers and wanted to be a part of that exploding scene. They began home-brewing, but with capital being so hard to come by in this economy and a lack of extensive brewing knowledge, the three decided a brewery was out of the question.

But not long after the brewery door closed, the bus door opened. Yes, the bus door – the Jax Brew Bus door. The three — Josh Carpenter, Mike Maulsby and Glenn Vopper – found an old airport shuttle bus on foreclosure sale, pooled their money, and bought a bus. They had a snazzy wrap added to jazz up the outside and began working with local breweries to put together tours.

Now the bus operates on Saturdays visiting three local breweries and one brew pub. Riders purchase a ticket and are shuttled to Intuition Ale Works, Bold City Brewing, Engine 15 Brew Pub, and Green Room Brewery. Riders get tours at several of the breweries and beer samples at all of them included in the $50 ticket price.

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to ride the bus and experience the service first hand. The ride begins at Tinseltown on the Southside and travels to Intuition Ale Works first. Manning the bus is a driver and a tour guide. Our guide for the day was Maulsby with Vopper driving. Along the way, Maulsby entertained us with interesting information about the local and national craft beer scene.

At Intuition we were ushered into the brewery bar to taste several of the breweries beers along with information about each. The tasting was followed by a tour of the brewing facilities and a visit to the Tap Room where we were encouraged to try other beers or fill growlers.

The next stop was Bold City Brewing where we were again treated to a tasting and a tour. Brian Miller, co-owner and Brewing Operations Manager, related several interesting stories and treated everyone to a taste of beer directly from the fermentation tanks.

A stop at Engine 15 at the beach yielded more tastes and some welcome food. The final stop was at Green Room Brewery where riders received a complimentary beer.

During the drive time an interesting thing happened, 14 strangers became fast friends. We were all drinking together, telling stories, and having the time of our lives. The Brew Bus became a matchmaker of sorts bringing together beer lovers and letting them learn from each other. It gave people the opportunity to share discoveries of great beers and it did it all in the span of just five hours. On these points alone the Jax Brew Bus is a smashing success.

As the craft brew scene in Jacksonville grows, the Jax Brew Bus will look to expand its route. For now it conducts tours every Saturday from 1:00 to approximately 6:00 PM. For more information or to make a reservation visit the Jax Brew Bus website at: www.jaxbrewbus.com.
