Intuition Ale Works teaming up with Gilbert’s Underground Kitchen for Southern beer dinner

The sleepy little town of Fernandina Beach north of Jacksonville, Fla. has seen an uptick in interest lately among culinary circles. Sure, the area has been known to North Florida residents as a fun place to spend a summer afternoon at its eclectic bars and scattered eateries. It is also known as a place for a weekend of partying at the Isle of Seven Flags Shrimp Festival every year. But, aside from the posh restaurant at the nearby Ritz-Carlton, fine dining was something of a mystery to the area. So, when Chef Kenny Gilbert opened his Gilbert’s Underground Kitchen in the historic town, it caused quite a stir. To celebrate his food as well as the burgeoning North Florida beer scene, Intuition Ale Works has teamed up Chef Gilbert to create a beer dinner that is sure to be as delicious as it is exciting.

Gilbert, born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, started early in his culinary career with the encouragement and help of both his mother and his father. From his mother Gilbert learned the basics of cooking; measuring, preparing and presenting dishes. From his father, he learned the art of BBQ from grilling to saucing.

By age 11, the budding culinary virtuoso had cooked his first Thanksgiving dinner on his own to the delight of his proud parents. In high school he was known to cook meals for his swimming team after practices and meets. His cooking skills were lauded by all and it was no surprise when he expressed a desire to pursue cooking as a career.

According to his website, Gilbert, “…attended The Pennsylvania Culinary Institute where he received a degree in Culinary Arts. Upon graduation, Kenny relocated to Jacksonville, FL, where he joined The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company as an apprentice in the garde manger kitchen of their Amelia Island property.  Kenny worked his way up to Chef de Cuisine at the age of 23 at the Ritz, helping to consistently secure the AAA Five Diamond Award for the property throughout his tenure there.”

Later, the Chef designed and opened the Jacksonville Beach favorite, Nipper’s Beach Grill a Caribbean-inspired eatery. He was also a contestant on Bravo’s Top Chef television program.

For the beer dinner with Intuition Ale Works, the chef worked to create a menu supremely satisfying Deep South-inspired fare.

Brews for Branches events at local breweries salutes Earth Day, Greenscape

brew_for_branchesLocal Jacksonville breweries Intuition ale Works, Aardwolf Brewing Company and Bold City Brewing Company have teamed up to celebrate Earth Day and honor Greenscape of Jacksonville with a three-part party, membership drive and fund-raiser.

The first event will take place on Thursday, April 23 – the day after Earth Day – at Intuition with a special keg tapping ceremony of a very special beer brewed in conjunction with Aardwolf specifically for the event.

“We brewed a single hop IPA with Simcoe hops,” said Andrew Cattell, head brewer at Intuition ale Works. The beer was also aged on oak to give it nutty, vanilla, caramel, coconut and wood flavors.

The drive for awareness and membership continues on Thursday, May 7 and Aardwolf Brewing Company in San Marco. Guests will have an opportunity to speak with Greenscape personnel while they once again enjoy the collaboration brew created especially for the event.

The final event of the series takes place at Bold City Brewing Company on Friday, May 15. Guests will have a final opportunity to support Greenscape and speak with members of the organization. They will also have one last chance to taste the delicious brew created especially for the event.

Greenscape began in 1975 as an organization dedicated to helping downtown Jacksonville and its surrounding neighborhoods become greener places to live. Today, the organization is credited with over 250,000 trees added to our local canopy. By working with the City of Jacksonville in an advisory capacity to establish the City’s Landscape Ordinance, serving on the Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee, JEA’s Tree Coalition, and the Keep Jacksonville Beautiful Commission, Greenscape continues to further the awareness of the importance of our tree canopy to the health and economic well-being of our community.

Intuition Ale Works creates two brews for One Spark

onesparkAt a recent kick-off party for the Downtown is on Fire initiative, Intuition Ale Works debuted their Smoke IPA. But, if recent wins by the brewery are any indication, it seems that they are just as on fire as downtown. For the second year in a row, the brewery has been tapped as the Official Brewery of One Spark, billed as ‘The World’s Crowdfunding Festival.’

Intuition will be brewing two limited release beers for One Spark 2014 instead of just one like last year. According to a press release from the brewery, demand for last year’s One Spark Kölsch was so high that the decision was made to add another brew to the lineup this year.

In addition to One Spark Kölsch, a smooth German-style ale with mild hops and a crisp finish inspired by the kölsch beers of Cologne, Germany, Intuition will brew One Spark Alt. The new beer is inspired by the altbiers brewed in Dusseldorf, Germany and is an amber malty brew with a smooth finish. Interestingly, the beers are examples of the two ale styles produced in otherwise lager-dominated Germany.

Intuition Ale Works founder Ben Davis decided to create the second brew due to the wildly successful nature of the One Spark event last year as well as the enthusiastic acceptance of One Spark Kölsch. Of the event, Davis said, “People can use One Spark to directly support the ideas of others. As a Jacksonville native and small business owner, I know that supporting our downtown core with events like these and contributing to the spirit of innovation will be vital to our city in years to come.”

One Spark is a five-day event that connects people with great ideas to the resources they need to bring those ideas to fruition. The festival runs from April 9 to April 13, 2014 in a 20-square-block, multi-Venue gallery in downtown Jacksonville, Fla.  Artists, entrepreneurs and innovators display their ideas for all to see and vote on. Attendees vote on the projects they like the best to distribute nearly $300,000 in funds.

Davis has proven to be an outspoken and unwavering downtown advocate with his involvement in the afore mentioned Downtown is on Fire campaign. His Smoke IPA was inspired by and created exclusively for downtown Jacksonville only as part of the movement and should be appearing on tap at bars and restaurants in the city core now. For a list of locations serving Smoke IPA, go to the Downtown Marketing Collaborative’s website: http://www.downtownisonfire.com/promotions.

One Spark and One Spark Alt will be available on draft at the One Spark Festival in the San Marco Dining District Food Village and at beer kiosks set up throughout downtown Jacksonville during the festival.

Intuition Ale Works’ Underdark is coming, prepare yourself

UNDERDARK-poster-460x710Once per year Intuition Ale Works releases a beer that has become a legend in the craft beer community. This year, on Saturday February 1st, the brewery will release their coveted Underdark Imperials Stout. Last year’s release of the inky black brew garnered rave reviews at RateBeer.com earning 98 out of 100 points. On Beeradvocate.com the brew attained 94 out of 100 and an Outstanding rating.

Underdark is a mixture of several of Inuition’s other, popular beers King Street and Truck Stop Stouts that has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Last year’s release was described by Steve Flores owner of Kickbacks Gastropub on Beer Advocate: “Aroma dominated by coffee, slight vanilla and molasses and just a touch of alcohol. Mouthfeel is thick and viscous. Very thick. Taste has nice coffee, touch of chocolate and vanilla, lots of roasted malts. Plenty of complexity but I think more layers will be added to the mix with additional aging in the bottle. Alcohol is well hidden. Deep. Dark. Mysterious. Perfect name, spectacular beer.”

The brewery has stated in an email newsletter that they set aside a limited quantity of last year’s release so that beer lovers could compare the beer with some age on it side-by-side with the new release.

As is fitting of such a huge release, the brewery is throwing a party and will shut down King Street like they did for their anniversary in November. In addition to Underdark, there will be a number of guest beers on tap. Hungry party-goers can chow down from two food trucks: Funkadelic and Chew Chew.

The 2014 release of Underdark bomber bottles will go on sale at 12:00 noon for $15 each. Purchasers must show a valid government-issued ID to purchase. A strict limit of two bottles per person will be adhered to. In addition to the beer, Underdark t-shirts ($20) and snifters ($6) will be available.

European Street Cafe Brings Back Beer and Basball

The European Street Cafes have become known for their great selection of brews from the world over. Most of their stores boast over 200 hundred different brews both on tap and in bottles and cans. Slip into the quaint and comfortable surroundings of one of the four restaurants around town and you will find local brews from Intuition Ale Works and Bold City on tap alongside internationally known brews such as Weihenstephaner, Lindemans, and James Hoag’s.

European Street is also known for their generous happy hour that rewards patrons with two draft beers for the price of one daily from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. And that goes for the tall glasses of Imports as well as domestics. Many an evening has been lost swilling great beer, telling tall tales, and just enjoying the ambiance at the bar at one of the restaurants.

But, perhaps the greatest idea ever brought to fruition by E-Street, is the Beer and Baseball nights at the Jacksonville Suns baseball games each year. On these fun-filled nights, beer and baseball fans can purchase a ticket to the game and a wrist band to the Beer Garden just outside left field for a mere $20. For that measly pittance fans can enjoy a great baseball game in one of the country’s greatest farm team venues, the Baseball Grounds at Jacksonville, all the beer they care to drink (until the kegs run dry), and all the E-Street food they care to eat including Monster German Wieners.

The first of this year’s Beer and Baseball events takes place Saturday night, April 28 as the Jacksonville Suns – the double A affiliate to the Miami Marlins — take on the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, first pitch at 6:05 pm. Beer from Intuition Ale Works will be featured. Tickets for the Beer and Baseball event are $20 and may be purchased at any of the four European Street locations.
