Jax Ale Trail celebrates one year, documentary series

jax-ale-trailThe Jax Ale Trail, an award winning marketing effort by the fine people at Visit Jacksonville, has just turned one. As a means to put Jacksonville’s burgeoning craft brewing industry in front of potential visitors, it has been an overwhelming success. Consider these numbers as proof of the program; since its inception in December 2014, more than 20,000 people have used their Jax Ale Trail Craft Beer Passports, and almost 900 craft beer enthusiasts from 39 states and five countries have completed their Jax Ale Trail Craft Beer Passports. While it is well known that the Jacksonville craft beer scene is made up of a lively and fiercely loyal crowd of followers who embraced the Ale Trail, nearly 30 percent of all completed passports were from out-of-towners.

“It is with great pride that we look back at the accomplishments of the Jax Ale Trail in this first year. What started as an idea to showcase our already existing breweries and turn them into a tourism attraction has really taken a life of its own, putting Jacksonville on the national map as an emerging beer destination,” said Katie Mitura, Director of Marketing and Communications for Visit Jacksonville, the city’s tourism marketing organization.  “It makes us extra proud to see visitors coming from other cities and countries to drink our great local beer and explore Jacksonville.

To add to the accolades heaped on Visit Jacksonville for the Ale Trail, Livability.com just named Jacksonville as one of the top 99 best cities with the best beers in the country. For the inaugural listing, the website was looking for cities that met three criteria: they are good places to live, they are consumers of craft beer and they are producers of the best beer around. Jacksonville fit the bill handily.

Coincidentally, last month I was approached by a group of college students who were looking to make a series of documentary films about the Jax Ale Trail. They were looking for a someone to act as host for the programs who had knowledge of the Jacksonville beer scene and of craft beer in general. I was honored to fill the position and had a lot of fun making the four short films they produced.

Over the next few days I will post one of their films per day. They range in length from around eight minutes to 13 or so minutes. Some feature interviews with brewers or owners while others simply show off the brewery and their beers.

Of the breweries on the Jax Ale Trail Bold City Brewing Company, Green Room Brewing Company, Aardwolf Brewing Company and Engine 15 Brewing Company are featured.

The first stop was Bold City Brewing Company.

Jax Beer Society to host booth at One Spark 2015

Jax Beer Society logoThe Jacksonville beer scene has been building for years. Ever since Brian and Susan Miller opened Bold City in 2008 craft beer fans have been clamoring for more and more hand-crafted, full-flavored beer. Now, six years later, Jacksonville’s eight craft beer breweries and three of the area’s beer distributors have banded together to found the Jax Beer Society an organization dedicated to promoting Jacksonville craft beer and craft beer culture.

The group announced today in a press release that they will host a creator booth at this year’s One Spark Festival in downtown Jacksonville. Read the press release below for full details.

Jacksonville, FL – Jax Beer Society, a nonprofit trade association committed to developing and preserving an active beer culture throughout Northeast Florida, launched earlier this year and made its debut at the Riverside Craft Beer Fest in late February.

“Jax Beer Society is thrilled to be part of One Spark, which is one of Jacksonville’s most exciting events. We hope to raise awareness of our group, build involvement in the community, and add to the already growing number of beer enthusiast and associate memberships. Additionally, we are excited to promote Jax Beer Week, which will take place Nov 8-14,” said Kara Scremin, President of Jax Beer Society.

Membership is open to brewers, wholesalers, associate members (e.g. retail outlets, brew pubs) and craft beer enthusiasts who are interested in working together to advance the emerging craft and specialty beer scene in Jacksonville and to promote regional events and festivals that support the industry.

Jax Beer Society founding members are: Aardwolf Brewing Co., Bold City Brewery, Engine 15 Brewing Co., Green Room Brewing, Intuition Ale Works, Pinglehead Brewing Company, Veterans United Craft Brewery, Zeta Brewing, Brown Distributing, Champion Brands and North Florida Sales.

“Our beer community has always been very supportive of each other. So, it was only natural that we come together to elevate Northeast Florida’s beer culture and make a focused effort on Jax Beer Week. The interest and support the community has shown for Jax Beer Society has already been overwhelming — and we’ve only just begun,” said Scremin.

Memberships can be purchased at www.JaxBeerSociety.com/members or by visiting the Jax Beer Society booth at One Spark located outside Visit Jacksonville, 208 N Laura St. the organization’s main focus will be the coordination of Jax Beer Week which will take place November 8th through 14th. Jax Beer Society will organize a number of events across the city that focus on promoting the area’s craft and specialty beer scene. Jax Beer Week will culminate in a two-day grand tasting event at Hemming Park in downtown Jacksonville on November 13th and 14th.

Local tour operator and media company collaborate to bring beer tours to Jax and more

A new tour operator based out of Ponte Vedra, Fla. has announced collaboration with Talentino Media. Play Harder Tours (PHT), headed by William Tabone, is offering exciting weekend packages that revolve around two of America’s favorite things: beer and sports. With new partner Talentino Media, founded by Joe and Susanne Talentino, PHT will provide exciting getaways throughout the Southeast and beyond.

“Craft beer is a craft,” Tabone said. And it is for that reason that he focuses his tours on local craft brewers.

Currently planned travel packages include:

  • NFL Road Trip to the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Lions at Jacksonville, Nov. 2 – 5, 2012
  • NFL Road Trip to the Jacksonville Jaguars vs. NY Jets at Jacksonville, Dec. 7 – 10, 2012
  • New Orleans Mardi Gras, Jan. 25 – 28, 2013
  • Las Vegas Super Bowl Weekend, Jan. 31 – Feb 4, 2013
  • New Orleans French Quarter Festival Apr. 11 – 14, 2013

Other destinations that are still in the planning stages and will be announced soon include Savannah, Tampa, and Atlanta.

Itineraries for the Jacksonville NFL Road Trips include accommodations for three nights in Jacksonville Beach near numerous restaurants and nightlife opportunities. On Friday night guests will have an opportunity to meet other guests at a “Meet & Mingle” welcome dinner that takes place at Joe’s Crab Shack steps away from the Atlantic Ocean. Saturday guests take an interesting and fun guided bus tour to four Jacksonville craft beer breweries. Stops include a free pint of beer and tours of the facilities at Intuition Ale Works, Bold City Brewing Company, Green Room Brewing Company, and Engine 15 Brewing Company. On game day, guests will enjoy a catered tailgate party prior to the game at the Pepsi Tailgate Cabanas with beer included at no additional charge.

Future packages to other cities will include similar itineraries with the focus on fun, food, and beer. Next year Tabone has aspirations to put together tours to beer festivals throughout the nation with festival tickets, brewery dinners, and accommodations. He is even investigating putting together packages to London, Belgium, and Amsterdam next year when the Jaguars play in the U.K.

Talentino Media is a Jacksonville based media and production company founded by Joe and Susanne Talentino, creators of CW17’s weekly television program “I Know Jax,” which features a weekly Happy Hour segment featuring The Beer Guy discussing craft beer. Talentino media also produces Coastal Companion.com, a website for visitors and residents focusing on fun things to do on the coast of South Carolina, Georgia and Northeast Florida. Play Harder Tours is a Ponte Vedra Beach based travel provider with tours centered on craft beer and sporting events.  Together the Talentino/PHT collaboration will work to expand the scope of the tours to eventually include food and musical events.  Talentino Media will spearhead the online and television promotion of travel packages while Play Harder Tours will be responsible for all coordination, booking, and implementation with the goal of safe responsible travel for people that like to have fun

Jacksonville and National Craft Brewing Growing at Record Pace

The new numbers are out from the Brewers Association (BA) is that 250 new breweries opened in 2011. Among those 250 is Jacksonville’s Green Room Brewing that will be celebrating its one year anniversary this weekend. According to a press release from the BA, there were 1,989 breweries in operation last year that employed 103,585 workers. The numbers represent an 11% growth in the industry over 2010.

“We saw rapid growth in brewery openings last year, particularly with microbrewery start-ups, and these numbers are poised to rise even more in 2012,” said Paul Gatza, director of Brewers Association in the press release. “In February 2012, we already topped 2,000 operating breweries—a truly remarkable milestone. We look forward to even more success and the continued expansion of the craft beer market.”

The growth of the industry in Jacksonville continues with the opening of Pinglehead Brewery in Orange Park and the upcoming addition of Aardwolf Brewing in San Marco later this year. Additionally Jacksonville brewing operations are expanding with the Intuition Ale Works looking for a second brewery location to support demand for its canned products and Bold City Brewery amping up bottling operations by offering bottles in six-packs.
