New Belgium celebrates 25th anniversary with new releases

Between the opening of their new brewery in Asheville, NC, and their 25th anniversary celebration, things are certainly going their way. To celebrate their silver anniversary, New Belgium asked five of the countries best breweries to collaborate with them on creating new versions of their iconic Fat Tire Amber Ale.

In addition to the collaborations, New Belgium has two new Lips of Faith releases hitting store shelves this month.

Ft. Collins, Colo., June 1, 2016 –The best way to celebrate a birthday is by gathering up your friends. New Belgium’s Fat Tire & Friends Collabeeration mixed pack is starting to hit store shelves. The pack features five of the nation’s best craft breweries, with each taking a turn at reimagining Fat Tire, New Belgium’s flagship beer. This 25th anniversary package is a variety 12-pack, with five variations of the amber ale, including:

  • Allagash Brewing Company (Portland, ME) – Fat Funk Ale features a De Dolle house Belgian yeast strain, which adds pear, banana and spice to Fat Tire’s malty goodness. Expect notes of stone fruit, sweet tart and peppercorn.
  • Avery Brewing (Boulder, Colo.) – Fat Wild Ale focuses on a fruit-forward hop bill featuring Huell Melons and a dose of brett evoking notes of apricot and pineapple.
  • Firestone Walker (Paso Robles, CA) – Fat Hoppy Ale focuses on what Firestone Walker does best – big beautiful hop forward ales. Fat Hoppy has a light malty sweetness initially, with a subtle bitterness in the middle that lingers ever-so-slightly.
  • Hopworks Urban Brewery (Portland, OR) – Fat Sour Apple Ale starts out with a snap of tartness, courtesy of Lactobacillus and apple juice, then gets balanced with Fat Tire-inspired malty sweetness and slight herbal bitterness.
  • Rhinegeist Brewery (Cincinnati, OH) – Fat Pale Ale focuses on two components: Rhinegeist Brewers’ malt interpretation of Fat Tire married with the fruity, wild, almost wine like character of Fiction. Together they offer up a slightly bready, biscuity and slightly toast malt backbone combined with fruity Southern Hemisphere hops and abundant fruity esters from the strain of Belgian yeast that Rhinegeist used.

De Koninck Flowering Citrus Ale
De Koninck Flowering Citrus Ale is another New Belgium Lips of Faith collaboration beer available now. This collaboration with Antwerp, Belgium’s historic De Koninck Brewery, offers a pop of key lime and lemons. The fragrance of hibiscus, rose petals and strawberry-tinged Mistral hops make it the ideal beer for soaking in summer days.

De Koninck Flowering Citrus Ale is 7.4 percent ABV, 30 IBUs, and is available in four-packs and on draft.

Tart Lychee
The 2016 Tart Lychee also debuted in June and is part of New Belgium’s Lips of Faith lineup. The beer is brewed with exotic lychee fruit and cinnamon, then blended with sour Felix from the brewery’s wood cellar for a citrusy, tropical sip that attacks with an invigorating tart bite.

Tart Lychee is 7.5 percent ABV and 12 IBUs.

New Belgium announces fall line up

newbelgiumNew Belgium Brewing Company, the makers of beer-lover favorite Fat Tire, has announced their fall beer line up. The collection includes a return of the popular Pumpkick pumpkin ale, a return entry from the Lips of Faith series Le Terroir American sour ale and a new entry to the Hop Kitchen series called Hop the Pond.

After debuting last year, Pumpkick is back with new label artwork, but the same great taste that made it a popular new entry into the crowded pumpkin beer category. Pumpkick is a spiced ale brewed with pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. It has a unique, tart kick from cranberries and a hint of lemongrass. Added oats cream up the mouthfeel, making this anything but your typical pumpkin beer. Pumpkick is 6 percent ABV and 18 IBUs. It is available in 12 oz. bottles and draft now through October.

It is no secret that new Belgium is embarking on an extensive sour beer program. The company made news several years ago when they actively began installing new foudres, wooden tanks used to age sour beers. This season, the Lips of Faith series adds Le Terroir, a dry-hopped American sour ale packing the bold, hoppy nose of an American IPA and all the pucker of a well-crafted sour. Le Terroir is a French term meaning “of the earth,” and references the environmental conditions that affect the beer.

“Our wooden barrels age sour beer in varying temperatures, humidity and vibrations,” said New Belgium’s Specialty Brand Manager, Lauren Salazar. “Add in another variable by dry-hopping with peachy, mango-like Amarillo hops and we’ve created a beer that changes every time we brew it.”

The Amarillo hops serve as an aromatic complement to its complex, wood-aged backbone, leaving no bitterness. A juicy finish rounds it out. Le Terroir is 7.5 percent ABV and available in 22 oz. bombers and on draft now through December.

The final beer in New Belgium’s fall releases comes from the brewery’s Hop Kitchen series. Hop the Pond is a double IPA brewed with Admiral hops from England, Galaxy hops from Australia, Styrian Dana hops and Citra hops from the U.S. This beer hints of malty sweetness with big bitterness that bounds in with a full, fireball temperament. Brewed with raw international materials, Hop the Pond is a potent mixture of tropical fruits and herbal, resinous notes. Its diverse flavors and aromas will bounce truly adventurous hopheads around the world in 80 IBUs. Hop the Pond is 8 percent ABV and is available on draft now until it’s gone.

Cigar City & New Belgium to collaborate on new Lips of Faith brew

Not long ago, and after long last, New Belgium brought their delicious brews to the sunshine state. Now, the Colorado brewing behemoth is announcing a collaboration with our own Cigar City Brewing Company. Get all the details in the press release below.

Ft. Collins, Colo. – October 30, 2013 – Attention, Lips Lovers! New Belgium Brewing’s two newest quarterly Lips of Faith offerings, Cigar City + New Belgium Collaboration Ale and Wild2 Dubbel are now out for all to enjoy. Collaborations have become a favorite in the Lips of Faith line and this meeting of the minds with Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing continues that tradition. Wild2 Dubbel will reintroduce the soon-to-be-famous Schisandra fruit to beer lovers everywhere.

The Cigar City + New Belgium Collaboration Ale beer starts with a fruity, citrus nose, followed by an abundance of Cascade, Pacific Jade and Wakatu hops. Anaheim and Marash chilies usher in a flavor that starts sweet, gets tangy and finishes spicy and tannic. Spanish Cedar spirals were added for some subtle woody and tobacco tones and a Bier de Garde yeast brings zesty phenols for topping. ABV 8.5%.

“This playful,  full-bodied beer will be a delight in Florida, Colorado and everywhere in between,” said New Belgium Assistant Brewmaster Grady Hull. “Meanwhile, Wild2 Dubbel is in a class of its own, offering a traditional, Belgian-style dubbel with a wild side.”

Wild2 Dubbel is full of dark and robust malts creating deep chestnut tones and a tawny haze. Along with brettanomyces, this beer is spiced with the mysterious and splendid Schisandra, known as the five flavored fruit, bringing a complex peppery and pineapple push to top the banana and bubblegum notes of the Trappist yeast. The beer opens sweet and creamy, mingles with the tropic tones of the conditioning bretta, and finishes with a dry, warm spice. ABV 8%.

Over in the Hop Kitchen Series, this season’s Fresh Hop is a medium-full bodied IPA made with certified salmon-safe Oregon hops that are picked fresh off the vine and trucked directly to our brew kettle. It starts out malty sweet, builds in some bitterness with a long bitter linger. Learn more about certified salmon-safe hops at www.salmonsafe.org. Fresh Hop is 7% ABV and 75 IBUs.

“Fresh Hop is made with salmon-safe Crystal and Sterling hops that are grown using practices that ensure healthy watersheds that allow native salmon to spawn and thrive,” added Hull. “We are proud to support the efforts of farmers who work hard for that salmon-safe designation. It makes the beer taste that much more satisfying.”
