Northeast Florida Beer Cup set for Sept. 27 at Florida Theater

If you are planning on attending this year’s Northeast Florida Beer Cup event at the Florida Theater on Thursday, September 27, you had better get your tickets soon. The event, which features craft beers from both local and regional brewers and tasty foods from local eateries, is limiting ticket sales to 500 this year. If last year’s event is any indication of the fun to be had, this is a not-to-be-missed party.

Jacksonville’s premier lifestyle magazine, Jacksonville Magazine, is putting on the event again this year to sponsor the Children’s Miracle Network. Last year the event attracted over 400 beer enthusiasts and foodies who descended upon the glamorous and exciting Florida Theater to eat, drink, and enjoy the sound of local bluegrass sensation Grandpa’s Cough Medicine.

This year the event will once again feature music from GCM along with food and drink from a stellar list of brewers and fooderies. Among the beer suppliers this year are: Bold City Brewery, Intuition Ale Works, Beer:30, Green Room Brewing, Engine 15, Pinglehead Brewing Company, Sweetwater Brewing Company. Food will be furnished by European Street Café, Mellow Mushroom, French Fry Heaven, MOJO No. 4, Pele’s Wood Fire, and two outstanding food trucks: Mother Fletcher’s and On The Fly will be set up to feed departing guests. In addition the member of Jacksonville’s home brew club, C.A.S.K. (Cowford Ale Sharing Klub), will be providing samples of their creations and Baking Under the Influence will supply sweet treats made with beer. Other beer-centric folks expected to be at the event include the guys from the Jax Brew Bus, a local beer tour operator and Just Brew It, a local home brewer supply shop.

As if all that were not enough, the members of C.A.S.K. will be conducting a “People’s Choice” competition where you get to choose your favorite from among the club’s brews. There will also be a silent auction with an outstanding collection of very exciting merchandise up for grabs.

The event runs from 6:30 to 9:00, Thursday, September 27 at the Florida Theater downtown Jacksonville on Forsyth Street. Tickets are $35 for one or four for $120 and may be purchased online at Event Brite by following this link: https://beercup2012.eventbrite.com/.

Terrapin Invades Mellow Mushroom Tinseltown Today

In some circles the term 420 refers to anything that is connected to marijuana. So, in typical stoner style, April 20 has become 420 or “Weed” Day. But, not everyone has adopted the day as a celebration of everything ganja, some have simply taken the name and applied it to a day for being mellow, having fun, and relaxing with good friends, good music, and good beer.

Such is the case with the Mellow Mushroom at Tinseltown, this afternoon beginning at 4:00 pm and continuing until 8:00 pm, the gang from Terrapin Beer Company of Athens, GA will be taking over the bar area with multiple taps of their delicious brews and several surprises. One such surprise is that the brewery’s mellow classic, Wake n Bake Coffee Oatmeal Stout, will be served through a Randal of coffee beans to give it an extra caffeine and coffee kick.

Wake n Bake is described as “an amazingly thick and enjoyable beer with a hint of sweetness,” by one aficionado on RateBeer.com. Most drinkers will find that this thick, black as midnight brew, emanates a heady coffee aroma with notes of cocoa and vanilla. A sip of this thick brew will reveal the coffee and sweet cocoa upfront with deeply roasted malts and slight alcohol and oats notes. It’s like biting into a freshly-baked oatmeal cookie that has been soaked in coffee for a few minutes.

Terrapin Beer Company began in Atlanta, GA when two brewers met while working together at another microbrewery. Spike and John became fast friends and began to craft an idea for a new brewery that turned the brewing world on its ear while still maintaining a lifestyle befitting a brewery committed to supporting local music, the environment, and living life to the fullest. Athens seemed the perfect home to their company and the boys set up shop in 2002.

That same year, Spike and John entered their very first brew, Rye Pale Ale in the Great American Beer Festival’s American Pale Ale competition and brought home the gold medal. At only six months old Terrapin had made an indelible mark on the craft beer world and set their reputation in place as a brewery to be reckoned with.

The gang from Terrapin has visited Jacksonville before and experience promises that spending an evening with these guys is full of stories, jokes, and awesome beer. You will not regret spending some time with these guys tonight at the Mellow Mushroom Tinseltown, nor will you regret quaffing a few of their exceptional brews.

Beer and pizza, is there any better combination? I think not! In the beer community, the ‘Shroom has become legend. Not only do they quality beers on tap, but the regularly hold special event evenings focusing on specific breweries. For American Craft Beer Week they are highlighting one of the original brewers of the craft beer movement — Sierra Nevada.

Tonight you have a unique opportunity to taste one of Sierra Nevada’s greatest accomplishments — Bigfoot — as a vertical tasting. What does this mean exactly. Well, you will be able to taste several years worth of this tasty brew side-by-side so you can enjoy the nuances and subtle changes in taste that this beer has as it ages!

Get to this one early so that you are sure to get in on this one-of-a-kind tasting!

Don’t worry, I’ll let you know how they are. And you can always come to the Fest on Friday and try it for yourself.

First two people who find me at one of these events tonight will be showered with fabulous prizes — OK, more like t-shirts and assorted other beer schwag! But, that’s still good, right?

And don’t forget to get your tickets for and attend the Jacksonville Craft & Import Beer Festival this Friday at the Jacksonville Memorial Arena. There will be food, entertainment, and LOTS of beer tasting. Tickets are $45 for VIP admission at 6:00 PM or $30 for General admission at 7:00.
