European Street Beer & Baseball returns this weekend

beer-and-baseballFewer things are more all-American than that ritual of summer that takes place in towns and cities all over the nation. In parks both grand and make-shift, players face off and swing for the fences. Fans pack bleachers, line up along fences and cheer on their teams with a hot dog in one hand and a cold brew in the other. I am referring to baseball of course; the big leagues started play earlier this week and the Jacksonville Suns – minor league representatives of the Florida Marlins – begin play tonight.

Another tradition that is returning this week in conjunction with baseball is European Street’s Beer and Baseball nights in the left field Beer Garden. This year the first of five Beer and Baseball nights is this Saturday, April 6, just in time to end Jax Beer Week. Beer and Baseball nights include a ticket to the game, all-you-can-eat European Street Monster German Wieners and sandwiches and, of course, all the beer you can drink.

The event this Saturday costs $30, with proceeds going to a long-time E-Street bartender that is battling breast cancer and includes a Monster German Weiner t-shirt. The cost of the remaining Beer and Baseball nights will be $20, but will not include the t-shirt. The way the event works is that the food and beer are put out approximately 30 minutes prior to the first pitch. There are generally two kegs of beer available and they flow until both kegs are dry.

Andrew Zarka, of European Street, says that the featured beers this Saturday night will be Blue Moon and Third Shift. He also says that both Highland and Lazy Magnolia have expressed interest in sponsoring future games.

The remaining Beer and Baseball nights will take place:

  • May 25
  • June 22
  • July 13
  • August 31

Tickets are available at all four European Street locations.

Bars vie for the title of Great American Beer Bar

Earlier this year the folks at Craft Beer brought the Beer City USA contest to determine the best beer city in the country. The hotly contended challenge ended up in a tie with Ashville retaining its crown for the fourth year even while sharing it with Grand Rapids. Now the same evil geniuses who ran that contest have opened the Great American Beer Bar competition. This time the contest seeks to find the best beer bars in each of five regions in the United States.

The website narrowed down some 3,300 nominations to just the 10 most suggested in each of the regions. Now it is up to you to decide which of the remaining bars will earn the title of one of the country’s Great American Beer bars. Voting for the honor is open to the beer-loving public through September 20.

Florida is represented by RedLight Redlight in Orlando. The popular beer bar is lauded for its smart draft selections and extraordinary cellar list.

Cast your vote on the Craft Beer website at: http://www.craftbeer.com/pages/news-and-events/news/show?title=vote-now-great-american-beer-bars-finals.

Craft beer and football; a match made in heaven

Football season is upon us and that means there will be plenty of gridiron action to go around on weekends and several other nights of the week. Whether you are a diehard NFL fan or a rabid college football fan, one thing is certain; you will need plenty of cold suds to wash down your football obsession. If the makers of the macro lagers have it their way, you will be drinking tasteless, overly-chilled, fizzy, watery, yellow liquids that they pass off as beer. But, if you are looking for something that packs a flavorful kick to go along with the crushing action on your television, turn to the many craft beer choices you have to refresh you during the gladiatorial combat.

News outlets all over the country are touting craft beers to go along with your Saturday or Sunday afternoon games. And, why not? The craft beer industry is rapidly growing and making inroads to the hearts, minds, and taste buds of football fans from Florida to Alaska and everywhere in between. Esquire Magazine, Men’s Health Magazine, and others have all published their picks for the best craft beer from each NFL city. Some choices are spot on, while others make a craft beer lover scratch their head. Regardless of what you think of the so-called expert choices, craft beer is certainly on the minds of the national media and beginning to get the respect it is due.

Locally, here in Jacksonville, there are myriad choices for beer to go with your football addiction. Men’s Health suggests you try Bold City Brewing’s Fritz’s Hefeweizen along with your gameday brats and hot dogs. They also recommend Bold English Old Ale is you seek a more robust beer. Esquire says to try Engine 15’s Rye of the Tiger pale ale as a companion to your football frenzy – just be careful to not get the Survivor song with a similar name stuck in your head. MSNBC’s Bites segment on the Today show recommends another Bold City brew Mad Manatee for its piney, hop-forward flavor and proximity to Everbank Stadium. And Craftbeer.com suggests taking a cooler full of Intuition Ale Works cans to your tailgating party.

Something else Jaguars fans can enjoy on home game days is tailgating with the crew from Intuition Ale Works. All you have to do is mosey on over to Lot H outside the stadium, look for the Intuition van and enjoy great beer, good food, and all manner of fun. This Sunday, Sept. 16, the guys from Tailgate32 will be joining the bunch from the brewery along with representatives from Big Green Egg.
